Overview
Ghorepani Poon hill trek is probably one of the shortest yet one of the most beautiful treks. If followed the same route back, this trek can be done as quick as 3 days and in case of time, it can be extended for around 5 days. In this very short time you would quickly reach the altitude of over 3000 meters from around 1000 meters. This trek proves that the length of the trek really does not define its beauty.
The trek begins from the touristic city of Pokhara, from where you board a vehicle and drive for around 2 hours to reach Nayapul. Once off the vehicle and on foot, you will immediately merge on the trails carved on lush green hills and along gushing white water stream. Sharing the way with locals and mules carrying loads, you will make your way village after village. Few things that you may want to keep your eyes on are the local inhabitants who dress uniquely, small stone slated houses, forest of rhododendrons, wild habitats of the forest and obviously the mountain panorama.
The villages are the homes of the brave Gurung communities who have earned their fame as the British Gurkha soldiers. 2 of the most significant villages are Ghorepani and Ghandruk. Ghorepani means horse water and it received the name in silk route trade period and was derived as such because it was one of the most famous rest area for horses and traders. Second, Ghandruk is the largest gurung village in the region which has several hundreds of traditional houses. There are hotels with modern day amenities but with traditional touch. Furthermore, the village also houses one small yet appealing Gurung cultural museum. At times, when weather and everything permits, you could be one of those lucky travellers to witness their cultural rituals.
