Gosainkunda Trek

Overview

According to Hindu mythology, Gosainkunda is where the heaven meets the earth. Gosainkunda trek is named after a highly sought pilgrimage, which is also the zenith of this trek. The trek basically is named after a glacial melt, a lake, which is believed to have been created by the trident of Lord Shiva. Telling you the story in short, Lord shiva once drank the poison that evolved while the earth was being created. And, in the agony of and pain resulted from the poison, he flew to the himalayas and rested his trident. As a result, the spring erupted and hence the lord pacified his pain by drinking the water. This being one of the major reason, unlike other trekking destinations in Nepal, this trek sees equal amount of pilgrims along with international tourists.

Whatever be the myth, this week long Gosainkunda trek is not just a voyage to the high altitude cluster of 108 lakes but also a way to get closer to the nature and the mountains. On your way to the top, you will make your way through several villages inhabited by Tamangs and see their magnificent carpentering skills along with the jaw dropping range of Langtang, Ganesh and Manaslu. Taking blessings from local monasteries and lamas, you will walk through prayer flag decorated trails, eat locally made organic food and drink the home brew raksi (liquor). You will ‘om mani padme hum’ all the way to ‘om namah shivaya’ meaning, you will traverse through villages inhabited by followers of Buddhism to make it to the holiest of the Hindu pilgrimage. This is a very beautiful example of religious harmony practiced by Nepalese people.

Equally beautiful is the topography of Gosainkunda trek, where from almost every bend you will see the snow clad mountains. This trek is not just about the holy lake but also mountains and natural presence around it. You will play hide and seek in the forests with these mountains to see the monkeys play in the wild. Furthermore, you will make through the most beautiful forest housing wildflowers filled with caterpillar cocoons or the later stage of their life. The offerings of langtang are endless, if you wish you would be able to find from hot water springs to goat cheese processing units and almost every elements to make your trek a joyous one. Alike people of Langtang, people of Gosaikunda as well could make the most out of your travel.
